In the then Spanish colony of Cuba, the habañera emerged as a 19th Century Antillean version of the old European contradanza. The new habañera rhythm had an immediate influence in the birth of the tango and the danzon. Habañeras are still popular performed regularly in Catalunya and have given rise to new groups and composers in the genre. On this new disc, Marina Rossell sings twelve habañeras on themes related to the sea.
