Cobla Sant Jordi Ciutat de Barcelona
Founded in 1983, Cobla Sant Jordi Ciutat de Barcelona won the award for Cobla of the City in Barcelona in 1997, awarded by Barcelona City Council. The ensemble has explored all the areas of the relevant repertoire. However, since its foundation, it has shown an acknowledged will to deal specifically with all aspects of cobla concert music, with the programming of well-known works, neglected works and recently composed music.
Cobla Sant Jordi Ciutat de Barcelona was initially led by Jordi León with the support of Manuel Oltra as artistic director. Xavier Pagès now occupies the position of main director. The group has constantly been able to draw upon the leadership of prestigious figures such as Manuel Oltra, Joan Lluís Moraleda, Salvador Brotons, Alfred Cañamero, Salvador Mas, Manuel Valdivieso, Josep Caballé, Josep Vila, Albert Argudo, Antoni Ros-Marbà and Virginia Martínez, amongst others. It has also been able to collaborate with prestigious soloists such as Daniel Ligorio, Albert Guinovart, Sergi Alpiste, Jordi Vilaprinyó, Nabí Cabestany, Juan de la Rubia, Anna Comellas and Manel Camp, along with ensembles such as the Catalan Orpheus, the Choir of the Great Liceu Theatre, the Sant Jordi Choir or the Symphonic Orchestra of the State of Lithuania.
Cobla Sant Jordi Ciutat de Barcelona has performed in all the counties of Catalonia and Rosselló and has always taken part in the main sardana events of Catalonia. It has also performed in countries such as Germany, France and the USA. Also worthy of mention is the ensemble's constant presence in a variety of International Music Festivals, in particular the season of cobla concerts held in the Catalan Palace of Music, as the main ensemble of the “Cobla, Heart and Dance” season. The group has also performed several times in the Auditori, occasionally in collaboration with the Barcelona Symphony/National Orchestra of Catalonia.
